Further Improving Your Soccer Game
Are you comfortable with what you have achieved as a soccer player? Do you know what it takes to take your game up a notch?
Have you ever had the goal of making a team or breaking into the starting line-up? You worked hard to accomplish your goal… working on skills outside of practice… extra training.
Did you plateau after you accomplished your goal?
Too often, after achieving a goal, players become too comfortable and level off.
When you are comfortable, progress is impeded… You stop doing the very things that got to that level in the first place. To get to the next level, you need to re-set your goals to challenge yourself and improve your game.
How do good soccer players achieve greatness?
Great soccer players have a secret weapon that gives them an advantage over their competition… It is their mindset of achieving more!
- Great players are committed to daily improvement and raising their level of play.
- Great players never rest on their laurels.
- Great players are focused on what they can do in the present instead of being comfortable with what they accomplished in the past.
The moment you become satisfied as a soccer player, you lose your hunger to improve your game. You can be proud of your accomplishments but you must find ways to amp up your game and reach for new heights.
Jurgen Klinsmann, U.S. National Team Coach knows about the process of continual improvement and achieving greatness.
Klinsmann helped West Germany win the World Cup as a player in 1990 and coached Germany to a third-place finish in the World Cup in 2006. As the coach for the U.S. squad, Klinsmann coached the team to its best year ever in 2013, winning 16 games.
As Klinsmann gears up to take Team USA to Brazil for the World Cup, he wants his players to challenge themselves and reach for more:
“When I see experienced players… relax a second and think, ‘I’m there because of who I am,’ I get mad. I don’t want them to do that, because the moment you relax means you’re done. You should call it a day.”
Klinsmann wants to foster competitiveness in his players and their drive to strive for more:
“I want them to compete, you know? I want them to realize there comes in a kid, 18 years old, [who] is damn talented… and he’s going to steal your spot if you don’t watch out.”
If you want to move your game from good to great, follow these tips:
- You want to have a purpose or mission. What do you want to accomplish in soccer? Having a purpose helps direct your focus and action in pursuit of your goals.
- You should continually evaluate and reset your goals and be committed to daily improvement. What do I want to accomplish today?
- You need to take action to make things happen. What specific steps will I take today to move me closer to my goals?
By pushing your limits and moving out of your comfort zone, you will achieve greater results!
